Physical Therapy Job Description
Physical therapists have primary and secondary roles and responsibilities. Physical therapists are primarily responsible for patient care (the evaluation, treatment, and discharge of patients).
Primary Responsibilities:
- Initial visit
- Examination – take history and perform tests and measures to help diagnose current movement dysfunction as well as identify baseline level of function and impairments, determine plan of care, and determine potential referrals to other healthcare professionals
- Treatment – begin to treat patient to help decrease pain and improve range of motion (ROM) and strength via manual therapy, exercise, and patient education
- Prognosis – determine appropriate frequency of therapy visits and estimate duration each patient will likely need to come for formal treatment session
- Follow-up visits
- Progress and adjust treatment based on plan of care and patient response to previous exercises and manual therapy
- Reassessments (generally every 30 days or 10 visits)
- Perform re-evaluations (subjective report from patient; objective measurements taken on initial evaluation) to determine progress toward goals and appropriateness for continued therapy
- Discharge patient to home exercise program and/or customized gym program when patients’ goals are met
- Other
- Documentation
- Gym program – work with PT aide and gym member to determine an ideal program to help individual achieve their goals (15 minute slots)
